
Nine months after technology giant Sony Corp launched its own version of high-definition digital video, Blu-ray, the company looks set to repeat its own history -- launching a format that nobody wants at a huge expense to both early adopters and the company itself.
Last week, the company announced that it will not support producers of adult, pornographic material on its discs. A similar move was made by Sony in an earlier battle for market dominance with its BetaMax tapes.
The availability of pornography was a major factor for the success of VHS. Sony's previous decision to disallow the content on its product guaranteed its reluctance from a consumer market that, despite national protests against the industry, likes its adult viewing.
