Sex And The E. Coli Bacteria

Here's a bit of disquieting research news - the bacteria E. coli tend to swim upstream in flowing liquids. The revelation, which appears in a paper to be published Monday, February 5 in the journal Physical Review Letters, could explain how the bacteria manage to make their way far up the urinary tract to cause pyelonephritis, a particularly nasty kidney infection.

Yale University researchers Jane Hill, Jonathan McMurry and Hur Koser collaborated with Ozge Kalkanci of Bogazici University in Istanbul on the work, which they believe is the first observation of the natural tendency of bacteria to swim upstream.

HIV Pill Shows Promise

The first test of a daily pill to prevent HIV infection gave a tantalizing hint of success, but a real answer must await a larger study due out next year.

The experiment, done in Africa, mainly showed that the drug Viread is safe when used for prevention. Fewer people given the drug caught the AIDS virus than those given dummy pills, but so few in either group became infected that valid comparisons cannot be made, scientists said.

Quick Sex Is The New Sex

When you first get together, you can't keep your hands off each other. A steamy look at a party or an accidental-on-purpose brushing of legs under a table has you hailing a cab in no time. But once you've been together for years, sex is likely to be relegated to the back-burner.

ON the whole, quickie sex lends itself well to standing positions - either facing each other (depending on your height difference) or from behind. That way, it's quicker to readjust yourselves if you're suddenly surprised.
