Porn Industry Revenues Beat Microsoft

Roulla Yiacoumi looks at how the porn industry is driving technology - and vice versa.

Every January, thousands of gadget geeks from around the world gather in Las Vegas to witness the unveiling of new toys at the annual Consumer Electronics Show. In an adjacent hall in the Sands Expo and Convention Centre is a show of toys of a very different kind - the Adult Entertainment Expo.

Sex And The E. Coli Bacteria

Here's a bit of disquieting research news - the bacteria E. coli tend to swim upstream in flowing liquids. The revelation, which appears in a paper to be published Monday, February 5 in the journal Physical Review Letters, could explain how the bacteria manage to make their way far up the urinary tract to cause pyelonephritis, a particularly nasty kidney infection.

Yale University researchers Jane Hill, Jonathan McMurry and Hur Koser collaborated with Ozge Kalkanci of Bogazici University in Istanbul on the work, which they believe is the first observation of the natural tendency of bacteria to swim upstream.

Betamax Revisited?

Nine months after technology giant Sony Corp launched its own version of high-definition digital video, Blu-ray, the company looks set to repeat its own history -- launching a format that nobody wants at a huge expense to both early adopters and the company itself.

Last week, the company announced that it will not support producers of adult, pornographic material on its discs. A similar move was made by Sony in an earlier battle for market dominance with its BetaMax tapes.

The availability of pornography was a major factor for the success of VHS. Sony's previous decision to disallow the content on its product guaranteed its reluctance from a consumer market that, despite national protests against the industry, likes its adult viewing.

The Physics Of Sex

Physics Of Sex

Much of what you experience during arousal and sex results from changes in the way your circulatory system moves your blood around.

Your heart races and your cheeks flush as excitement builds. Sooner or later, if all goes well, swelling of the erectile tissue in your groin will lead to the erection of your clittoris or your penis, as the case may be. Generally, your body handles all the blood flow issues automatically. Still, a look at the physics of fluids reveals that there are many things you can do to take control of your blood flow during arousal.

Sex In Space

Sex In Space

Sex in space is a hot topic around NASA, and believe it or not, it's the title of a new book. The book is about whether astronauts or space tourists should ignore the possibility, or address it.

With men and women living on the space station, what is NASA's policy on the subject? NASA's answer to all questions about sex in space is not that sex is off-limits to astronauts, but that it's none of our business.

Porn’s Impact On Technology Exaggerated

Printer

Pornography not only provokes male hormones but it also promotes some technology adoption and development. Its impact has been especially noticeable in the last 30 years, but its influence is as old as the printing press:

Mass-produced smutty text and pictures began to appear soon after Gutenberg's invention sparked the Protestant Reformation, in the early 16th century.

Research Looks At Impact Of Rheumatoid Arthritis On Patients’ Sex Lives

PRESS RELEASE - New research, presented today at the 7th EULAR annual congress, reveals one third of rheumatoid arthritis patients feel their condition has 'considerably' negative influence on their sexual activity.

Around a third of patients (31%) reported no impact on sexual activity, with an additional 38% reporting only 'little' impact. In contrast, 21% reported their condition as having a considerable impact on their sexuality, with one in 10 reporting their rheumatoid arthritis made sexual activity either almost or totally impossible.

Compared to the female patients, men were more likely to report large impact of health status on sexual activity (27.8%, 40.0%, p= 0.001) , with patients with less than 12 years of education more likely to report large impact, compared to those with more than 12 years education (35.4%, 24.6%, p= 0,001).

Surprisingly, whilst joint pain associated with the disease was not reported as playing a significant factor, higher levels of fatigue (tiredness) and functional limitation predicted perceived problems with sexual activity.

Sex And Headaches Study

For many people, sex can turn a dull throbbing pain into a raging headache.

For a few who jump into bed feeling fine, orgasm can trigger a sudden, explosive headache. And for a minority of people, headaches are cured by a roll in the hay.

A small pilot study exploring the link between migraines and libido suggests there might be a reward for headache pain. In the June edition of the journal Headache, researchers found that young adults with migraines reported higher levels of sexual desire.
